The movie may be irrelevant to the new generations, I am a kid from the ’80s and grew up watching the only channel Doordarshan on black and white television for about 15yrs, where Sunday in the beginning and Friday and Saturday later used to telecast old Hindi movies. Chitrahar (a little YouTube Experience) on Wednesday for half an hour was the only music video we used to watch. That was the only access to TV entertainment we used to have in our school days. Maybe the reason I am really fond of Bollywood movies and songs. The IMDB for me was my Dad who used to have all the information about movie actors, music, and all the related information. This is completely my personal experience and may not be relevant to you all.
So, the question is, what exactly Sholay is to me?
Let me take you back to my childhood. So far, I remember, it was the year 1996 when Doordarshan (the time when there was no cable connection, no electricity, and no color TVs at least at my home) released the Sholay on the Doordarshan channel and that was the time I watched this saga for the first time in 13 inch Black and White Television.
What happened that day?
It started around 2 O’clock as far as I remember and dad, who used to claim watched Sholay more than 15 times in a theatre already, decided to close his Medical Store (being specific because it was Medical store he decided to close for rest of the day) not only that, he closed the main door of the house so that no one disturbs us while watching the movie and then the movie started and dad continued surprising me by lip-syncing almost all famous and epic dialogues and you’d be surprised if I tell you about the timing he was saying those lines, it was just perfect. Later, I found that it wasn’t the only dad who decided to close shops, but most of the streets in India were empty during the telecast. That was the effect of Sholay on the people and for me, it was extraordinary.
Though it was re-released in theaters many times I must say I waited for the best and got a better experience and now I wish I could say to dad that I too watched Sholay in a theatre that even in a 3D. Beat this.
So, how was the experience?
Well, I must say words cannot describe the whistle you listen to when Gabbar (whistles for villain) enters with an epic dialogue “Kitne Aadmi The?” I cannot explain when the re-mastered songs of RD Burman gave me Goosebumps. You cannot imagine the experience where a theater full of people say the same dialogue “Tera Kya Hoga Kaliya?” at the same time and you laugh out loud with Gabbar. You get to hear claps, whistles, and laughs along with emotions drama, comedy. No doubt, one of the biggest and entertaining Bollywood movies of all time. You would feel the better screens and sounds with many surprising 3D elements. Imam Chacha’s “Itna Sannata Kyun Hai Bhai?” will be different. You will wait for Samba’s only dialogue in the movie “Purey pachas hajaar” and definitely don’t want to miss it, do you?
“Basanti inn kutto ke samne mat nachna”, “Yahan se pachas pachas kos door gaon mein jab bachcha raat ko rota hai, toh maa kehti hai bete so ja… so jaa nahi toh Gabbar Singh aa jayega” and many other iconic dialogues that are still trending in different platforms and will be trending in future platforms as well. Just to give you the perspective, these iconic dialogues have dedicated websites if you Google or should I say ChatGPT now.
Experience the movie for various characters like one of the horrifying villains of all time, the Gabbar Singh, the iconic friendship of Jai and Veeru (Let’s not forget people give their friendship as precedent), the funny love story of Veeru and Basanti. The silent, dark yet emotional verbally unexpressed relationship between Jai and Radha, chatterbox Basanti, Loyal Ramu Kaka, Imam Chacha, and most of all retired Thakur Baldev Singh. RD Burman songs, friendship slogan, Ye Dosti Hum Nahin Chodenge, an item song Mehbooba Mehbooba, Holi song Holi Ke Din along with others.
To me, Sholay is not a movie to watch, it’s a saga to experience. Most entertaining movie of the millennium, to me and I repeat to me.

Saw this poster in a restaurant and I just couldn’t stop myself from taking picture.
